Feature 1

I first learned about design from my mother, who was born in Japan. I grew up here in Southern California and spent summers helping out in her flower shop, in the Little Tokyo area of Los Angeles. It was there where I first started learning about design by studying Japanese flower arranging, Ikebana. This helped not only to train my eye to seek balance, symmetry and unity but it also helped to widen my appreciation for nature and deepen my intrigue of the natural world

After years of working as a buyer for a jewelry + design shop, I started designing classic pieces, made in high karat gold. At first I made these pieces for myself (out of necessity because I couldn’t find many on the market) and then, by request, I was making jewelry for others. Jana Turner Fine Jewelry was formally established in 2018 with a mission to manufacture ethical, handmade, high karat gold jewelry in downtown Los Angeles and to also give back to the community.

Feature 2

By investigating the geologic processes that created metals and gemstones, I’m constantly blown away by what I find. For example, all the gold and other heavy metals found here on earth were likely created billions of years ago by the result of a supernovae

or the collision of two neutron stars or a collision of a neutron star and a black hole. Further, certain heavy metals, including gold and platinum, as research suggests, came to our planet via heavy astroidial bombardment during the formation of our solar system. This is one of the many reasons I love gold so much and also why I use it to make jewelry. Energetically, gold can be healing, protective and grounding. It’s one of the few elements that are resistant to decay, oxidation or corrosion. It’s so fascinating and also so beautiful to think about the journey gold took to end up on our planet.

All of the gemstone pieces in our collection are one of a kind. We source stones from miners, stone cutters and dealers all over the world who share the same passion for interesting gemstones. They adhere to the UN Kimberley Process (kimberleyprocess.com ) that aims to reduce the sale of conflict diamonds that fund atrocities around the globe.

I’m attracted to and most often use gemstones that express some unique quality in them; like stones with beautiful mineral inclusions or opaque diamonds in lovely neutral colors. Every stone on our planet, from the plentiful quartz to the most rare diamond, represents billions of years of geologic processes.  These gems are built atom by atom, as they interact with other natural materials and respond to temperature and pressure all happening deep down inside the earth. I hope that our jewelry reflects our appreciation of all the different ways beauty can be expressed as well as the deep respect we have for the natural world.

By researching geological processes and basically learning all of the science I regretfully didn’t pay attention to in school, I have a miniscule understanding of how our world actually works. Basically, by understanding nature, we can better see ourselves as a part of it rather than apart.

And this has been a way for me to better understand our physical universe and by extension, better understanding myself and our place in the world. What a blessing.
